The stories of our russian students

4-year student of the LaPlas Institute’s Bachelor’s program

I got acquainted with MEPhI at the last year of school education, though I did not once visit it at that time. A good friend of mine that I participated in science exhibitions and fairs with just entered MEPhI (he was one year older than me). As I was interested in how to apply for MEPhI, I immediately started asking him about life of a MEPhI student. I was getting more and more positive feedbacks from him while he was going through the first course, and by the end of the year I was completely sure about what university to choose.

I finally visited MEPhI after having passed state exams, and it was the first university that I chose to come to. MEPhI always greets high-school graduates enthusiastically and cheerfully. You won’t get lost as there are friendly and helpful members of admission committee (they are students themselves) that guide you from reception place to the moment you have filled all necessary forms and are ready to go home. The enrollment system is open, transparent and absolutely easy to understand.

I enrolled at the university the same year that the transition from faculties to institutes took place. That situation made the life of applicants a bit more complicated because we were the first ones to enter the university under such conditions. Even students started studying in the new system since September whereas we had to deal with it since summer. When I told my friend I was going to enroll at the “T” faculty, he thought for a second and said that there was no “T” faculty anymore as it was replaced with the LaPlas Institute. He was pretty close saying it because a large part of “T” faculty indeed was transformed into the LaPlas Institute.

I did not have any second thoughts about what specialization to choose as even school students knew that thermonuclear energy ideas were a beacon in an ocean of energetics. I was a prize winner of a physics Olympiad and thus entitled to join this specialization regardless my exam results. Though already offered to provide documents needed for me to be enrolled, I decided to visit admission committees of other universities. However, those admission committees were pale by comparison to that of MEPhI as they either required a hell of bureaucracy to enroll a student or were nearly dead and not motivated in doing their job.

It was no surprise I chose MEPhI. The main factors that contributed to my final decision were as follows: time-proved education quality; a range of specialisations of great current interest (plasma, lasers, thermonuclear energy); the best dorms I had ever seen located just in 20 minute walk away from city center; well organised campus; and, of course, marvellous apple trees of the Kolomenskoe park situated next to the university.

It has been 4 years since my entering MEPhI now, a lot of challenging situations have been overcome. If I decided to write down all the adventures, all the ups and downs that happened to me in these 4 years I would need at least 5 books. In a nutshell, I can describe my way as exciting and educational, the way that I have never regretted to go. Thanks to the LaPlas Institute I was able to meet a lot of good friends that I shared common ground with, I not once had an opportunity to explore my inner resources in these 4 years and never felt like there was something missing. I am now a little bit jealous (in a good way) of future students as the LaPlas Institute has become something greater than it used to be at the time of my entering it. However, the greatest thing about it all is that you have an opportunity to evolve as well and make your own contribution to the evolution of the university/Institute/Department/group.

The opportunity to be a creator, a creator of something fundamental is something I am absolutely grateful for to my university!

And don’t forget that it’s you, the future student, that the development of the LaPlas Institute depends on. The strong student – the strong Institute – the strong University – the strong country! I hope to see positive-thinking, talented and creative high-school graduates among the LaPlas Institute’s students!

4-year student of the LaPlas Institute’s Bachelor’s program

4th year student of the LaPlas Institute Bachelor’s Program

I did not have to face a hard choice of university as I had been dreaming about entering MEPhI (one of the Russia’s best universities) long before I finished school. As I finished the MEPhI lyceum and successfully passed state exams, I visited the LaPlas Institute’s admission committee and got into such friendly and warm atmosphere that it was impossible to think of any other university.

It has been 4 years since that moment. I have become friends with many students including those from other universities; visited different cities and towns of our country; had brilliant professors and acquired fundamental and advanced knowledge, and all of it happened just because I entered the LaPlas Institute. There were some difficulties, though, but I have never regretted entering MEPhI. I also got wonderful and kind groupmates always willing to help that was especially important at first (and tough) courses. I encourage you not to hesitate and reach the LaPlas Institute’ administrative staff for help as they are very caring and always here for students. 🙂

Another great and important fact about studying at the LaPlas Institute is the opportunity to conduct scientific research, both theoretical and experimental, while being a student. I find my current scientific activity that I’m engaged in at my Department really inspiring and exciting, and I would like to keep doing it while getting Master’s degree.

2-year student of the LaPlas Institute’s Master’s program

I’m proud to say I’m the MEPhI student.

Ever since I was a child I decided to dedicate my life to science (and started going this way by participating in different physics and math olympiads). So, having defended my Bachelor’s diploma thesis, I decided to apply for MEPhI. Why? Well, for any person having a smallest idea of physics the title of this university is reminiscent of names of great Soviet scientists that used to work here. Let alone the scientific atmosphere that every room, and laboratory, and even every formula on a blackboard is filled with.

However, I soon realised MEPhI is not only about great history and atmosphere but also about hard and yet exciting work. In 2 years of Master’s program this work got me to a whole new level as a future scientist and specialist. The teaching staff consisting of dedicated and hardworking professionals, groupmates that are always here for me, motivation and the Institute’s support contributed a lot to my professional growth.

Being a final-year student of Master’s program, I am now taking pre-diploma internship in Sarov. Once again, those interested in science must have heard of this small technology city in Nizhniy Novgorod Oblast having become a hometown for the Soviet nuclear bomb and now being the city where the Russian Federal Nuclear Center “All-Russian Research Institute of Experimental Physics” is located. Conducting research in VNIIEF as the part of my diploma thesis makes me feel like a real scientist and be certain about my future. I consider working on diploma thesis to be a whole new phase in my scientific career – thanks to MEPhI! I would not have been here without MEPhI and those knowledge and practical experience I got there. Thank you, MEPhI! Thank you, LaPlas!

2-year student of the LaPlas Institute’s Master’s program

Entering MEPhI, I did not think much of specialisation. I liked solving Olympiad-level problems and wanted to be engaged in scientific research. That’s why, as any student had to choose a department at the end of the second semester, I decided to study at the Theoretical Nuclear Physics Department that has lately become a part of the LaPlas Institute. I’m glad I have had very tight-knit and creative groupmates. Besides, the LaPlas Institute’s dean’s office (administrative staff) has always been ready to help in any situation and been a friend indeed.

As I was applying for Master’s program, I was offered to enter a new program and take an internship in RFNC VNIITF, Snezhinsk city. It was not easy to make that decision to move to Ural, but eventually I have never regretted it. The job offered has turned to be quite interesting and intensive, and living conditions provided by VNIITF have allowed for concentrating on work and on getting money for food and housing. Of course, it was hard enough to leave all of my friends behind and head to a strange city, but I have managed to find new friends as theoreticians in Snezhinsk (half of them being MEPhI graduates, by the way) have proved to be amicable and caring. I’m planning to stay and work here after defending my diploma thesis.

As I look back to my past, I feel happy to have studied in this university and recommend everyone to enter MEPhI and the LaPlas Institute in particular.
